Rising gas prices hit home for North County commuters

With record high gas prices, decreased sales tax revenue, and a statewide transit budget cut of $1.4 billion, the North Country Transit District, on July 1, was forced to increase its fares and cut selected service. Fare hikes pushed a one-way regular ticket on the Coaster to $4.50 for Zone 1 travel, with 50-cent increases through Zone 4. A day pass on the Sprinter jumped to $4.50, with a regular monthly pass now priced at $59. Further price increases will go into effect Aug. 1 and Jan. 1, 2009. Several non-productive bus routes — carrying less than 10 passengers an hour — are also being cut, and, with roughly $3 million taken out of NCTD’s budget, NCTD has already let go of three top management positions, and will be cutting its driver pool by 10 percent.

“If anyone has the ability to tell Governor Schwarzenegger to change the budget, we’d appreciate that,” said Mayor David Druker. “This is the time for the government to subsidize and provide a way for people to get to work.”

Design Review Board admits new member

At the June 30 meeting of the Del Mar City Council, Brooke Eisenberg-Pike, a sculptor and former Del Mar City Council member, was appointed a spot on the Design Review Board. Eisenberg-Pike brings her experience on the San Dieguito Lagoon Committee and the Del Mar Fairgrounds Master Plan Ad-hoc Advisory Committee to the new position on the board. By a count of three votes to two, Eisenberg defeated Terry Gaasterland, a professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In October, there will be two more vacancies on the Design Review Board.
