Mesa board urges safety, habitat protection in Del Mar Mesa Preserve
By Suzanne Evans
A “lost world” where buckwheat that quails love to eat and white California wild lilac trees blossom in the spring in the Del Mar Mesa Preserve is “turning into an amusement park,” Del Mar Mesa community planning board chair Gary Levitt said at the board’s Nov. 13 meeting, complaining that “bike traffic has changed dramatically and has grown exponentially.” Levitt called for a reduction in some trails and preservation of others in the eastern part of Del Mar Mesa.
“At the moment, it is out of control,” Levitt said, noting new trails proliferating on the east side of Duck Pond and a “real lack of respect that it is a preserve.”

For those who feel Carmel Valley is the stepsibling in First District representation to the epicenter that is La Jolla that is about to change, according to newly-elected representative Sherri Lightner.
“They’re (City Hall) going to know where all of the First District is,” declared Lightner.
Even in La Jolla Shores, Lightner knows what it feels like to be one of the unheard at City Hall.
“With respect to the neighborhoods not being listened to, I’d become very involved in my community about 12 years ago and have been active in land-use planning, traffic and coastal issues as either land-use chair or chair of either the town council or shores association,” said the 17-year resident of La Jolla Shores who lived in Scripps Ranch for 17 years before moving to the coast.

In a second career, local resident blossoms as law
professor and ‘pro bono’ attorney for children
By Arthur Lightbourn
As the eldest in a family of seven children who were always encouraged by their parents to speak up and express their ideas, it’s not surprising that Margaret Dalton became a lawyer specializing in child advocacy.
But what may be surprising is that she was 41 when she entered the University of San Diego (USD) School of Law and studied at night for four years to earn her law degree.
During that time, she also became the proud mom of a baby girl.
“I like to be busy,” she chuckled recollecting that time in her life.
She earned her law degree and was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1994.
Social consciousness taken to a new level in the Himalayas
By Robin Duncan
Seva in Sanskrit means to serve. Payson Stevens and Avnish Katoch are two individuals that believe deeply in this concept. Through their combined efforts they are making Himachal Pradish — a beautiful, remote area in India — a better place.
Payson Stevens, a Del Mar resident, who resides here six months out of the year and in Kullu Valley the other six months, tells the story of watching a mother die in childbirth in front of the home that he was building there with his wife, author Kamla Kapur. It was a breech birth and it had taken the villagers three hours to carry the woman out of the mountains. Moved by the experience of watching someone needlessly die due to lack of basic healthcare, Stevens turned to his wife and said, “We cannot be just neighbors; we must be good neighbors.”
