Del Mar Country Club owner Madeleine Pickens, the local thoroughbred aficionado, recently made the Friday evening news as ABC-TV’s “Person of the Week” when she revealed to George Stephanopoulos that she’s searching for a plot of land about the size of the state of Rhode Island to create an equine sanctuary.

Carmel Valley youth raises Holiday donations for more than 25 families
Jewish Family Service of San Diego (JFSSD) has announced that its Embrace A Family Holiday Gift Basket Program has provided gifts, toys and gift cards to more 400 families in need this holiday season.
The Embrace A Family program matches families in need with generous individuals, families and groups in the community, who embrace these families to ensure that they have a joyous holiday celebration. More than 150 “Embracers” were provided with anonymous and general information on family members, including the description, gender and ages of each person, a holiday wish list, and holiday preference (Christmas or Hanukkah). These Embracers have provided toys, clothing, food, gift certificates, household items, and much more. Many of these families would not have holiday gifts without this program.

To get seventh- and eighth-grade boys to embrace their inner flower power, artist and educator Patti Fox gains their trust by sharing with them the artwork of men who paint muscle cars and create characters for Pixar and Star Wars.
It’s all part of the Del Martian’s plan to introduce art into the lives of the mostly Hispanic student population at Vallecitos School in the tiny North County community of Rainbow.

RSF Literary Society kicks off season with amazing true story of WWII

Nonfiction writer and poet Diane Ackerman was the first distinguished author in the ninth season of the Rancho Santa Fe Literary Society’s six-author luncheon series, which kicked off recently. The series is sponsored by Northern Trust, the RSF Community Center and this newspaper. The next luncheon, Jan. 9, will feature Pulitzer Prize-winner Richard Russo and his novel “Bridge of Sighs.”
